This "All in a Garden Green" melody appears in William Ballet's Lute Book (c. 1590), and it was first published in John Playford's "The Dancing Master", 1651 edition. Other settings of the tune survive from the 17th century, including Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck's (1562-1621) set of keyboard variations "Unter der Linden grüne", and later William Chappell's (1809-1888) 4-part arrangement.

This arrangement draws on my original compositional ideas, in addition to the variations composed by Sweelinck and Chappell. The tune has two sections: "A" (8 bars in modern notation) and "B" (10 bars). My arrangement begins with a chorale setting of the tune's "A" section, then accelerates to dance tempo. Next, sections of the tune are organized in a manner similar to an instrumental French rondeau (AB-aAab-AB), where the "A" and "B" sections function as a ripieno involving the bulk of the musicians, and the "a" and "b" sections are variations with smaller groups of musicians.
